What Does a Professional Organizer Actually Do? (And When Should You Hire One?)

When people hear that I am a professional organizer, I often get the same reactions from people:
"I wish I was organized like you."
"I need you in my place."
"I think I would be too embarrassed to hire an organizer."
Many people I talk to assume that professional organizing is only for homes with extreme clutter like you see on TV shows like 'Hoarders'.
In reality, the clients who actually call me are just very busy. They're often managing demanding careers, children and their various activities, moving homes or going through other major life transitions.
They are not lazy or disorganized. They are often overwhelmed by everything they're managing at once, and at some point the systems they use to stay organized stop working for them.
What In-Home Organization Support actually looks like
My In-Home Organization Support service is exactly what the name says. I come to your home, we work through each room together, and I help you build systems that fit how your household actually functions.
Before we touch a single shelf or drawer, I want to understand how you are using the space and where the organization system is breaking down.
For example, a mudroom that is constantly buried in shoes, backpacks, and sports equipment doesn't mean a family that can't tidy up. More often than not, the space was never set up to handle what comes through that door every day.
Once I understand the real problem, we build a solution specific to your lifestyle.

The Awkward Questions
People sometimes have questions they feel awkward asking before they book. Will you go through my personal things? Will I be expected to explain every item?
The answer is that this is your home, and my job is to support you through the process, not to inspect you.
We move at a pace that works for you, and you make every decision. I am there to help you think through the space and create a system you can actually maintain after I leave.
When people hire me
Moving is one of the most common reasons people reach out. Packing an entire household while managing work, family, and all the logistics of a move is a lot to juggle at once.
I help clients declutter before packing so they are not moving things they no longer need, and I help create functional systems in the new space so that settling in happens with less 'wait, where did I pack that?'
Downsizing is another situation where Organizational Support makes a huge difference.
Making decisions about years' worth of belongings is emotionally draining work, and having someone there to help you think it through the boxes and stay on track makes the process much more manageable.
I also help prepare homes for sale. Decluttering and staging the contents of a room before listing can make spaces feel larger and more appealing to buyers.
The focus at this stage is clearing and organizing so the home shows in the best possible condition before it goes on the market.

Why organization and design work together
I work as both a professional organizer and an interior decorator, and the two inform each other more than people expect.
A well-decorated room that lacks functional storage becomes difficult to maintain over time.
An organized room that was never considered from a design perspective can feel cold or uninviting.
My work takes both into account, because a space that functions well should also feel good to be in.
If you have been putting off dealing with a space because you are not sure where to start, or because the whole thing feels too big to tackle on your own, that is exactly what I am here for. Click here to book a free discovery call.
